Not Just Surf and Sand: Top 6 Things to Never Miss When in Thailand

When you think about Thailand, what comes to your mind? Amazing nightlife and beautiful beaches? Well, Thailand is much, much more than just that. You’ll discover absolute gems hidden in plain sight, making you want to visit this stunning country again. It’s time you go beyond just Bali and New Zealand to spend your holidays.

A disclaimer first: though some of the items on our list are not that common and deserve more attention, others may feel familiar - but don’t dismiss them as yet, as they are hyped for all the right reasons! Let’s dive right in, shall we?

#### 1. Explore Thailand's Beautiful Trails and Forests on Foot

Where: Prachuap Khiri Khan Province and Chiang Mai

Famous for its stunning beaches and vibrant urban scenes, Thailand holds a secret: A wealth of enchanting hiking trails waiting to be discovered. Just a stone's throw away from the lively resort town of Hua Hin lies the serene Pranburi Forest Park. Get lost in a leisurely 1 km long boardwalk winding through lush mangrove forests and towering pine trees, offering a refreshing retreat into the heart of nature. What’s more? The trail is not difficult at all and you can bring your little ones along.

If you are looking for a more immersive experience amidst nature's wonders, venture up north near Chiang Mai to discover the Buddha’s Footprint Trail.

Why it’s worth it: Spanning a 13 km round trip, this trail is a favourite among birdwatchers for its diverse wildlife and lush foliage. Don't forget to get a local guide, often available among the welcoming Hmong villagers - this will help you get more insight into the whole experience and enjoy it to the fullest!

Seeking adventure and spiritual growth? Head to Wat Phu Thok, affectionately called the 'Lonely Mountain' in Northeastern Bueng Kan. Climb its 359m peak through a series of rustic wooden steps and paths, each a meditation on the present.

How to reach: You have one-stop flights to Chiang Mai from all major cities in Australia like Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth, with Sydney being the most affordable of all.

💡Olanka tip: The climb, designed to reflect the seven levels to nirvana, offers a journey of both physical and spiritual change amidst ripper panoramic views. But if heights aren't your thing, stick to the lower levels—rumour has it the seventh is home to snakes!

#### 2. Stroll with Giants at the Elephant Nature Park: A Heartwarming Sanctuary

Where: Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai

Elephant Nature Park is a haven for rescued elephants and other animals, providing them with a second chance at life. Here, caring volunteers and visitors come together to support rehabilitation efforts, ensuring these majestic creatures thrive in a safe and loving environment. Plus, unlike other places, elephant rides are strictly off-limits here!

Why it’s worth it: As Manoj Gautam, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute in Nepal, praises, Elephant Nature Park is one of Thailand's largest and best-managed sanctuaries. It's a place where you can truly connect with these gentle giants while contributing to their well-being. Remember, not all sanctuaries are created equal, so choosing responsible tourism is crucial.

How to reach: You can take the most affordable one-stop flight from Melbourne to the Mae FahLuang-Chiang Rai International Airport, which is the nearest airport located on Phaholyothin Road, 8 km from Chiang Rai city centre.

💡Olanka tip: Opt for a memorable experience by walking alongside the elephants along scenic trails instead of riding on their backs. For more ethical elephant encounters, we recommend Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary in Chiang Mai and Elephant Valley Thailand in Chiang Rai.

#### 3. Explore Underwater Wonders in Thailand's Crystal Clear Waters

Where: Satun, Phuket, and Surat Thani

Dive into the depths of the Andaman Sea or Gulf of Thailand to meet its vibrant marine life. Thailand's warm waters and coral reefs teem with majestic manta rays and gentle whale sharks, creating a diver's paradise.

Thailand offers top-tier sites for every skill level. Discover the underwater wonders off the shores of Phuket, Ko Phi-Phi, Ko Tao, and Ko Pha-Ngan, where every dive promises an awe-inspiring adventure.

If snorkelling is more your style, head to the crystal-clear waters of Ko Chang and Ko Tarutao Marine National Park.

Why it’s worth it: You'll be greeted by a colourful marine species in their natural habitat, set against a backdrop of azure blue seas.

How to reach: Phuket is one of the most accessible places to reach in Thailand from all major cities in Australia, with flights taking you there all days of the week.

💡Olanka tip: Plan your underwater escapade wisely! The diving season typically runs from October to April, while the best snorkelling experiences are enjoyed from May to September.

#### 4. Get a Foot Massage at Wat Pho, Bangkok's Oldest Temple

Where: Bangkok

Wat Pho is a large and peaceful Buddhist temple located in Bangkok's historic district (Rattanakosin). It's famous for its stunning reclining Buddha statue that amazes tourists and worshippers alike.

Why it’s worth it: Wat Pho isn't just the oldest and biggest temple complex in Bangkok; it's also home to over a thousand stupas and a vast collection of Buddhist images. Its iconic 150-foot-long reclining Buddha, the largest in the world, is a sight to behold. Additionally, Wat Pho is known as one of the earliest centres for public education.

How to reach: Flights are available from all major cities in Australia.

💡Olanka tip: When you arrive, make a beeline for the pavilion housing Wat Pho's Traditional Thai Massage School. Sign up for a foot or body massage right away, as there's usually a wait (or even better, call ahead to book). The school also offers week-long courses in Thai massage for travellers interested in learning.

#### 5. Enjoy Bangkok's Finest Street Eats in Chinatown

Where: Bangkok

Following an economic resurgence post-COVID, Bangkok's street food scene is bustling with renewed energy, especially in hotspots like the Old Town, Charoen Krung Road, Bantadthong Road, and around the Victory Monument. Leading the charge as the birthplace of Thai street food is Chinatown, affectionately known as Yaowarat.

Why it’s worth it: Chinese-Thai delights such as oyster omelettes, noodle soups, rice porridge, and delectable black sesame dumplings call out to passersby along Yaowarat Rd, transforming the street into a neon-lit culinary paradise come nightfall. Keep in mind that many street food stalls take a break on Mondays, so it's wise to check ahead before making your plans.

💡Olanka tip: While exploring Chinatown, don't miss the chance to experience one of Bangkok's trendiest nightlife hubs, Nana Road (in Chinatown, not on Sukhumvit). Here, iconic watering holes like Tep Bar, Teens of Thailand, and the creatively themed TAX bar mingle with charming shophouses and inviting noodle joints, creating a vibrant and memorable atmosphere.

#### 6. Have a Splashing Good Time at Thailand's Spectacular Waterfalls

Where: Various districts

If you're someone who adored playing in fountains as a child, Thailand's abundance of unreal waterfalls will surely make your childhood days come alive, whether you're with your little ones or simply embracing your inner child. From destinations near bustling Bangkok, like Khao Yai National Park, just a 2.5-hour drive away, to more remote spots like Ubon Ratchathani in the northeast, Thailand offers a waterfall adventure suited to every swimmer and nature lover, from beginners to seasoned hikers.

Why it’s worth it: Khao Yai's Haew Suwat, made famous by the movie The Beach, may not be the tallest waterfall in Thailand at 20m (66ft), but its emerald-green pool provides the perfect oasis for a refreshing midday swim. In the western province of Kanchanaburi, Erawan Falls in Erawan National Park steals the spotlight with its seven bonza tiers and the delightful experience of tiny fish nibbling at your toes in the crystal-clear waters below.

Meanwhile, tucked away in the far northeast near Ubon Ratchathani, Soi Sawan waterfall awaits, surrounded by wildflowers in the cool season and offering numerous hiking trails leading to viewpoints that are absolute beaut.

How to reach: You can cover these places through local or private transport arrangements from Bangkok.

💡Olanka tip: If you're planning to beat the heat with a spontaneous dip, don't forget to pack a towel and swimsuit. However, keep in mind that changing rooms may be limited, so come prepared for a quick change on the go.

Priyanga was our trip organiser and I must say she outdid herself. She was always available to answer any of our questions and she planned a wonderful itinerary for us. The hotels were 4* but you must remember that the standard of 4* varies throughout the country. The hotels in Colombo, Kandy and Nuarelia were fantastic! Our guide Roshan was also brilliant, from the moment he picked us up at the airport we knew we were in safe hands. He was very knowledgeable and suggested lots of other things that were not on the itinerary incase we wanted to do any (which we did). Doing this trip without the company would have been very time consuming and stressful so it was great to be able to experience so much of Sri Lanka...
